Gaula 2015 — 20–27 June — Kåsen beat
In 2015 Ole and I returned to the Kåsen beat, situated about 1 km downstream from Borten og Losen.
The first two days brought sunshine for 23 hours a day, and the water level dropped steadily to around 120 m³/s — slightly too low for this beat. Then on Wednesday the rain arrived and the river rose more than a metre in just a few hours, reaching 370 m³/s.
When we fish for salmon in Norway it is absolutely not only the salmon we go for — the natural experience is just as important. In previous years we had a beaver family nearby, which we didn’t see this year, but every day we were visited by a great crested grebe out with all 9 chicks.
The family came every single day around midday, upstream along the east bank and home again along the west bank of the Gaula.
The map shows where salmon were caught or had a take across two weeks split between 2012 and 2015. It is meant as a guide — by no means the final word; that you will have to discover for yourself. Enjoy the nature and the beat.
The result after a week at the Kåsen beat in 2015: 5 salmon between 3.5 and over 9 kg. I took two home — the other three were released to grow bigger for next year. See also the 2012 page for more information about the beat. — Carl
